How Old is my New Parakeet?

User Question
I just recently bought a new Parakeet from a pet shop, I'm holding off in buying a second one because I'm trying to train her. As I mentioned I bought her from a pet shop, and the lady didn't tell me how old she is, is there a way I could find out her age. Thank you in advance.

The easiest way is to look at above her nose. Young parakeets will have strips in this area of their head, while older parakeets will have a solid color (usually yellow or white). You can see that here -

Other than that, a vet could try to make a guess for you. But there's really no easy way to tell the age of an adult parakeet easily. It actually doesn't matter that much once a parakeet is over say 8 months old, just how old it is, in the sense that it's no longer a 'kid' and it will take a while to tame. It's never to late to tame a parakeet though, so just give it some time and patience.
