Parakeet and a 9 week old Persian Kitten
User Question
How do I get them to coexist without a serious situation?
Lisa's Answer
So first off, the cage. It's always important for your cage to be in the most populated location for socialization reasons. With a kitten it's even more so important so someone is around to keep an eye on things. Make sure the cage is up high, with no landing areas for cats anywhere near it. Cover the cage at night so the cat doesn't get any ideas.
The only time you should take the keets out is either when the cat is locked in a room elsewhere or you lock the keets into a room where the cat is not. Get a door sign to put on the door in either case saying "KEEP DOOR CLOSED!" so that there aren't any accidents.
Maybe in a year or two when the persian becomes a big, sleepy cat, you can consider having them out together. But until then, all it takes is one keet landing on the floor for a pouncy kitten to get a meal.
