Parakeets Eating Human Foods

User Question
Hi- I'm greatful for your parakeet pages since my son came home with an

adoptee named Skidmark. In the past couple of weeks she & I (I guess

she's mine) have become great friends. Dad always had them & I had one in

college but I didn't click with Kluck (maybe it was the name?) Anyhow, I

let Skid out each evening & she takes great delight in flying from her

cage to my head. These past couple of evenings, she's also joined me for

dinner by perching on the edge of my bowl & checking out the insides.

There's the occasional slip INTO the bowl, but I watch out for

'accidents...' so far none. Just wondering if you are aware of any bad

things about her tromping around in my food. We change her cage daily.

Lisa's Answer
There are many human foods that are poisonous for birds, so be sure to keep that in mind. However, many things that we eat, birds can also eat, so those would be fine. Remember that something that is hot or cold can harm a bird's stomach, they aren't always wise about temperature. So only let your bird out when the food you're eating is the lukewarm type.

Also, human saliva isn't great for parakeets, so you shouldn't really let the keets nibble on food that you've begun to eat.

So if you make a little portion for the keet and a larger one for you, that works well!
