Parakeet Tumors and Cancer

User Question
We just recently lost our beloved little budgie to a tumor. He was such a

member of our family and we miss him dearly. Our veterarian, who

specializes in exotic animals, said that there was nothing we could do.

We have just purchased another budgie and want to give it the best care.

If this were to happen again, is an avian veterarian able to operate on a

budgie?

Thank you!

Lisa's Answer
I have a page on tumors and cancer here -

http://www.lisashea.com/petinfo/medical/tumor.html

but you could just as easily ask if it's easy to cure cancer in a human. Many, many people die from cancer each year, despite heavy doses of radiation and expensive medication. So a tiny bird, with such a little body, has far less chance of survival.

It's very sad, but some birds do get cancer. Unfortunately it is rarely treatable. There are times with a parakeet that the best you can do is help it to be comfortable and make its remaining days happy ones. None of us live forever, and cancer is just one of those things in nature that is still very potent.
