Taking New Parakeets to the Vet

User Question
I have a question about taking parakeets to the vet. I just got a new parakeet yesterday, named Spencer. Should i take him to the vet now?

Lisa's Answer
I highly, highly recommend taking any new parakeet to the vet for a new parakeet checkup. You should do that with any pet you get - whether it's a cat, a dog, a parakeet, a parrot, etc. There are just SO many illnesses that animals can get while in the breeding and transportation to the pet store, and a quick dose of medicine will fix it. But if you DON'T fix it right away, and the animal goes for months and months (or years and years) with this illness it can cause serious pain and problems. So it's always best to know right up front that everything is OK with the creature and that you have a healthy animal. Also if it is something REALLY serious most pet shops have a 30 day return policy, but if you don't bother to find out until after those 30 days, now you can be stuck.

Also as a general principle it's always important to know your local vet. If your parakeet got seriously injured at 3am, and you had to race it to the vet, it's good to know where that vet is and had at least met that vet once in your life.
