Eye Infection

User Question
I am a new bird owner. Have had budgie for only 2 months. Found her in a box without any thing but a perch that had fallen onto the floor of the cage. She seemed to be adjusting fine to our home. She is young (under one year) and has all her feathers.

Over the last few days, she has been scratching at her eyes and is loosing feathers around them. She seems happy enough otherwise and eats and drinks normally and is still flying when we let her out of cage. Once every couple days. She also rubs beak more so than normal.

Any ideas, I can't seem to find any information anywhere. Last week she lost a number of small feathers along with one long wing(?) feather. Not sure if this eye thing is part of the moult or not? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Lisa's Answer
Parakeets can definitely get eye infections, just like humans do. I would definitely call your vet to get this looked at!
