Parakeet Beeding Basics

User Question
I have had parakeets before and now I just received another pair. My hen laid 6 eggs. She is very protective of her eggs she won't even let the male near the eggs to sit on, is that normal?

Will the male help raise the young? Is there any special food to feed her when they hatch?

Lisa's Answer
It sounds like you haven't done you research before starting the breeding! I *highly* recommend you immediately call a vet in your area to talk to him. Both adult birds should have had a checkup before you began any breeding - and you should have gotten your entire aviary area set up with the first aid kits, supplies, foods and other items needed for this process. You need to also talk to breeders in your area to get advice and training, and own a few books on parakeet breeding issues and solutions.

Breeding isn't a casual thing to go into for a few hours a day. It's a serious task - parakeets can easily die during the egg-laying process.
