Cere Color and Food / Water

User Question
Hey I just got my birdy yesterday, her name is lacey even though im not quite sure if its a he or she yet, and i was wondering if you could help me with that because its cere isnt a solid blue or a brownish color, its more like a purplish blue.....

oh and something else also, is it normal for them not to be eating after first purchasing them, cuz shes eaten but not alot, and she hasnt had any water yet either

Lisa's Answer
Ceres change color over time so you really need to wait until they are 6 months to a year old before you can be certain which sex your parakeet is. Until then you're really just making a guess. You can of course take your bird to a vet (which you should always do with a brand new bird) and the vet will be able to tell for you.

A bird would die if they didn't eat food or drink water. Believe me, your bird is eating and drinking. She's probably just shy about doing it in front of you since she's in a new situation and doesn't know if she can trust you yet.
