Do All Females Lay Eggs?

User Question
Hi, Lisa! Wow, I'm so glad I stumbled on your site! Here's my question..

Well, I've recently been informed that all female parakeets lay eggs, be it in the presence of males or not. I've assumed my 'keet, Angel, is a female, because the bridge of her nose is brown. All of the seven years I've had her, she's not laid a single egg. Any explanation?

Lisa's Answer
All females have the POTENTIAL to lay eggs just like all female humans have the POTENTIAL to bear children. But all sorts of things happen in life. I have 3 parakeets, all are female, and they are all 8-9 years old. None has ever chosen to lay an egg. It's up to a given parakeet what she chooses to do. If a female parakeet never gets feeling maternal, she'll never lay an egg.
