Parakeets and Cats

User Question
I have not had good luck with keeping birds safe from my cats in the past. Is it OK to keep a parakeet in a large cage all the time or MUST it be let out sometimes? I have read all of your safety tips on your web pages, but, in fairness to the bird, I cannot let it out. If they MUST be let out, I will not be able to get anoyher bird - ever! :-(

Lisa's Answer
I'm not sure I see the difficulty with parakeets and cats? Parakeets definitely should be hand trained and able to come out of their cage to fly around - they're birds. But we're not talking about the bird being out 24 hours a day. Just for playtime, maybe an hour or two at a time. So you grab the cats, toss them out of the room, and close the door. Problem solved!
