Parakeets Won't Leave Their Cage

User Question
My parakeets hate to leave their cage. I've had them for about 10 months now, but still whenever I try to get them out of their cage they fly back in. And when they are out, they fly back to their cage. Why are they doing that?

Lisa's Answer
Your parakeets know that their cage is a safe and secure spot, and are wondering why you're trying to take them away from there. So it's a good sign that they like their cage a lot!

You can't really take your parakeets out of the cage and just say "here stay out in this big room" :) Set up another fun play area for them - either a full gym, or maybe just put some toys up on a curtain rod. Parakeets love curtain rods where they can be up high and watch the room. Maybe put some millet or tasty treats up there. Once they realize that they can easily fly back home whenever they want to, they'll be less worried about visiting their little 'fun park location'.
