Feeding a Quaker and Hawaiian Parakeet

User Question
I have a hawaiian parrakit and a quaker parrot. I was wondering is it good to feed them like cererol; like cornflakes, rasin barn and ect... What can you feed them exactlly? Can you please help me and my room mate with these answers?

Lisa's Answer
Do you mean a rose-ringed parakeet? I don't think there are any Hawaiian parakeets - but the rose ringed parakeet (it's green with a red bill) is native to Africa and India and many have escaped in Hawaii.

In any case, grain is fine for parakeets, but remember that most cereals that you buy in the store are laden with tons of preservatives and such to make it last on the shelf. That's not really good for parakeets. So try to buy natural cereals and they should only be part of a full diet. Birds need lots of fruits, vegetables and seeds in their diet too. I'm sure your local pet store has prepared parakeet food that is mixed with the nutrients, and then supplement that with a variety of foods from your own fridge.
