Black Beak in a Baby Bird

User Question
our blue, gray and white colored parakeets recently hatched their 1st clutch. all 4 eggs were fertile and all 4 chicks seem to be healthy. my question is about one of the babies...his (or her) top beak is black colored. i've never seen a parakeet with a black beak before. have you ever heard of such a thing?

Lisa's Answer
That's a common thing for baby budgies to have, it fades away as they age.

If you're breeding budgies, you should definitely have a book or two on budgie breeding information, plus a vet to contact with issues when you have them. Breeding budgies is taking responsibility for tiny baby birds, and you can't really rely on any far off website person to give you medical advice. Many issues with baby birds can be life or death within an hour or two, so having someone to call on the phone is critical.
