Arching his Back

User Question
I have adopted a 6 year old budgie who is fit and well, everytime I go near him he arches his back and goes into what I would call a trance. He seems to enjoy it and does it more and more. He has now started to do it if I am yards away and clap my hands just once. Could you tell me why he does this? is it a sexual reaction? I forgot to mention when he does it his eyes go almost completely white.

Thanks for any help

ps I have looked through the forums but can't find anything on this but if there is I apologise in advance.

Lisa's Answer
Well, it's hard to guess, but yes it could be that he's becoming fond of you :) Sexuality is a very normal part of adult life for parakeets just as with humans. So they very naturally think of having babies with people they love :) It's just what they do.

If you just have one, I might get a second one (of the same sex unless you're ready for handling the babies) to keep him company. Make sure you know what sex the one you have is first :) Other than that, I'd get him some toys and take him out to play more often, so he has more distractions in life than to dream about you :)
