Getting the Second Bird

User Question
2 years ago i bought a male parakeet 4 my sisters b-day. in october she bought another female parakeet. she suddenly lost interest in her parakeets, and i became the person that plays with them feeds them and does every thing for them. so part of my taking care of them is finding out about them so i stumbled on to your site and figured out that my female is still young and my male is an adult so is that unhealthy? should i leave them in the same cage? will that efect their mating in the future? please email me

thank u sooooooo much

I have pages on getting a second bird here -

Normally you really don't want to just plunk a new bird into an existing cage, you want to get them to be friends gradually. If you are sure these are male and female then take them to a vet to make sure they're healthy. I would really have them in separate cages until you have a long talk with the vet on what is involved in breeding parakeets and have all the equipment necessary.
