Hand Raised Budgies
User Question
Hi I was wondering why you shouldn't buy budgies with many in the cages at pet shops. I've been to a shop here in my town, and they seemed ok to me. they were healthy, happy, playful keets. i just wanted to know if there was anything wrong with buying one. if there is something wrong with them how much do you think a hand raised keet from a breeder would be? i've only got so much money and if we're talking a $50 keet i couldn't do it. i've found great deals from the shop on supplies, so that's not the problem, and providing food and the neccesities aren't going to be a problem. just the coast of the keet.
Lisa's Answer
Hand raised keets are about $40 or $50 - but you have to think long term here. The keet is going to live 20 years or more. Hand raised keets are far more healthy and friendly than store bought ones and therefore will be much more of a 'pet' for you than a 'fluffy thing that hides in its cage'. Also a good cage is going to run you probably $50 or more, and the vet visit checkup is going to be $20 or $30. Plus you have to feed your keet and get him toys. So it's much better to wait to save up that extra $20 or $30 and get a keet that you can take proper care of, vs stuffing a $20 keet into a $10 cage and having it be miserable and unhappy for the next 20 years ...
