When a Keet Passes Away

User Question
Help! I had a pair of very bonded parakeets - they are office birds - who were relatively young and, I thought, healthy. When I came into the office yesterday the female was lying, dead, on the floor of the cage and her mate is, understandably, despondent.

What can I do for poor Reynaldo? He is quiet, not eating, not responding to the things he used to (like music or my chirping) All this is understandable - I would mourn my mate in the same way. But - can I expect him to pull out of it? Should I leave him alone, should I introduce a new (potential) friend? He misses his Clara. And I don't want to loose him too. The two of them were the most affectionate birds I have ever seen - constantly preening and talking with each other...it's so sad. Any suggestions?

Lisa's Answer
I would get a new bird, but not put it into the same cage right away. I have advice on a keet's passing away and getting another bird here -

it's really a shame she was sick! I would look into where they were - are there breezes around there? Maybe strange chemicals were used near them?
