Parakeet Cage on the Floor

User Question
I have two parakeets. I work forty hours a week and go to school a half hour away. When I came home from work last week, My birds cage had fallen to the ground from where it was hanging. The bottom was busted and my wallet is gettin thin. I didn't have the money to go out and buy a new cage so instead I laid some newspaper on the floor and put the outer cage on the newspaper, leaving the top off of the cage. I figured it was a good idea because then I would be more likely to pay them more attention, and I have.

DO you think this is a bad idea?? They don't leave the cage much unless I am trying to hold them.

Lisa's Answer
The floor isn't a great place for a cage because cold air settles on the ground (the old hot air rises, cold air sinks thing). So your keets will be down with the drafts and coldest part of the house, plus the dirt and dust that settles there. I would really put them on a table somewhere, as long as there aren't cats in the house.

Also I really wouldn't leave the top off the cage while you are not there. Keets are mischevious and can easily get themselves behind bookcases or other tight spots and be there for hours and hours while you aren't home. They should be in their cage while you are gone, and if you have them hand trained, then you can let them out while you are there.
