Parakeet Cere Changing Size

User Question
I have a female whose cere is growing. It actually has quite a thickness to it but it is not covering the breathing holes She seems to be healthy and happy, but I can't find anything that talks about this at all. Do you know what it could be and should I be thinking of going to the vet? Thanks.

Lisa's Answer
Parakeet ceres do get tougher and crustier as they age, so that might be what you're seeing. If the nose-holes are still open then I wouldn't worry too much - but on the other hand parakeets can get tumors so if it keeps growing and growing, I would take her to a vet. Just getting 'harder' is one thing, but growing to say twice its normal size would be another.
