Keets and Beagles

User Question
My daughter got a parakeet last week as a gift. He is a very sweet bird, still a little skitish, though after reading your very informative site, I know that he is getting comfortable around me (he doesn't run when I put my hand in the cage and he closes his eyes when I speak to him). I had him in my daughter's room, but after reading some of your info, I'm thinking of moving him into the living room where most of the action is.

We have 2 Beagles though and I am afraid that their ocassional howling may scare him or do you think he may just get used to it? I never open his cage when the dogs are in the house.

I would also like your opinion on getting another parakeet. Are they happier if they have a parakeet buddy? Should I work on getting the first one hand-trained before I bring a new one in? I already love this bird and want so much for him to be my friend and can see that in time, we'll be great friends, but if getting him a buddy will make him happy sooner, then it's something I want to do.

Thanks for all of the info and for your time.

Lisa's Answer
Keets can get used to just about anything, so I'm sure your keet will get used to the howling over time. Heck, the keet might even learn how to howl back :)

I would hand train the first keet for 6-8 months before getting a second one, that way the keet will firmly bond to you before another competitor enters his life :)
