Keet and Dog

User Question
I'm 15 years old and I just got a parakeet from my Aunt she couldn't take care of her anymore so I decided I would take her. She's a female and blue. I have a dog and they both dont't really get along but I know if they would give each other a chance they would become friends. What should I do?

Also she's starting to bite us. At first it started out little just a nip and then it got harder and harder until now where I'm afriad to pick her up. She bites so hard it leaves scars.

Lisa's Answer
Keets can't really be friends with other animals. There is no way for a keet to "interact" with a dog for example. You wouldn't want the dog licking the keet, nor the keet landing on the dog. So while you don't want the dog harassing the keet, there isn't much beyond that that you can aim for.

Keets only bite when they feel threatened. It sounds like you're picking her up without training her first, if she is unhappy with this. Be sure to go through my hand training instructions step by step. You should never be doing anything that is so scary to a keet that she feels she has to bite to defend herself.
