Parakeet Always Lays Down

User Question
Just got a new keet and it is acting funny. Just wants to sit down or hide in a blanket. Won't get on my finger, but when I get it she loves to be petted but she lays down. She eats fine and drinks, feathers great, eyes and cere fine,, she just doesnt play. She chirpped for a couple of days but doesnt do that anymore. Oh, droppings are fine also. Do you have any suggestions?

Lisa's Answer
Some parakeets love to snuggle, although I would definitely work on finger training before you bring your keet outside. It is always critical that your keet know to get on your finger if you have to get her back into the cage, in case of emergency.

Parakeets really never lay on their sides. They just sit on their feet. Sometimes they hunker down so their butt touches the cage or perch, but they would not lay on their sides. If your keet is doing that, something is wrong.

If it's a new keet, I would take her for her new-bird checkup, and the vet could let you know if anything else is amiss. Maybe one of her feet is sore, or something like that.
