My Parakeet Wants Tissues

User Question
My female parakeet is behaving a bit oddly recently. She is insistent on grabbing tissues and wants them in her cage. Is this behavior due to a nesting instinct? We found her in the snow a year ago and do not know her age but think she was young so she could be about 1 year old.

Any thoughts?

Lisa's Answer
It could definitely be that she wants to build a nest - or it could simply be that she loves her new toy. Parakeets are extremely intelligent and are always curious about interesting shapes. Tissue would be a super cool item for a keet because they can hide under it, rip it up, and have fun with it. Parakeets love to shred things. I would get her different kinds of paper and cardboard to gnaw on too. And a cuttlebone :)
