Keet Feathers

Hello, your site has helped me a lot and i thank you for it. My mom gets really mad at the little stomach feathers that come out often so she made me put the birdi n the garage, during this time of year it's really cold. Is their anything i can do to prevent the feathers from coming out of the cage when the bird flies around in the cage? thanks in advance

Yikes, keets can't survive in cold garages!! You should just volunteer to vacuum them up daily, if that's what it takes. Feathers are hardly anything compared to the dust and dirt that most houses have in them. Try renting a carpet steamer sometime to see just what sort of gunk is in the average carpet.

There are cage shields you can buy - netting that goes around the bottom half of your cage to keep in the loose feathers. But really, keets don't shed continuously. They go through a molting stage, and then are fine for a few months, then molt again and so on. So it might just be that your keet is in a molting stage right now and will soon be over it.

Also birds really don't "fly" around in cages enough to stir things up - unless maybe your keet is never let out to fly around? Work on hand training your bird so she can fly around the room instead of flapping around in the cage. Also cage liners should be cleaned weekly so really there shouldn't be enough accumulation of feathers in there to cause a problem even if she DID go on a wild flapping spree :)
