Three Months - Not Tame

User Question
I do have a question though. I have a male budgie. I have had him about 3 months now. I bought him from a private breeder but he was not hand raised. He is out of his cage as much a possible (I have 3 dogs and 2 cats) so when I let him out I take him to a room with no other animals or I put all the animals out side so we can have some time together. Most of the time he will get on my finger some times he won't and sometimes he will let me pet him and most of the time he won't. I am a stay at home mom so he is not alone much.

Do I just need to give him more time?

Also to the right of your web site their is a "Train Your Parakeet" to talk in 15 days. Is this something to look into or is it a waste of money?

Thank you for your time

Definitely while some birds train in 3 months, others take longer. It sounds like you're doing a good job in having a safe environment for him to be out in, so just keep taking him out each day and spending time with him. Over time he'll learn to trust you and get on your finger.

Not all keets like to be petted. In my flock Santo loves to have her head rubbed and Nazo hates it. Remember, cats and dots are 'petted' by their parents and think this is a good thing. Birds are NOT petted by parents and consider things touching them to be generally bad :)

I really don't think anyone could guarantee to teach a bird to talk in 15 days - it all depends on the bird. Some birds NEVER learn to talk and some learn in a few months. I really don't know of any that could learn in 15 days. That sounds like a marketing gimmick to me. I have info on my site about teaching a bird to talk, and it involves talking to them daily, repeating the same phrases over and over again, up close so they can see your lips moving and understand this is communication. Males do learn to talk more easily than females do, so I would work on this daily and you might get him to do it!
