Feeding Time and Corn Cob Litter

User Question
HI Lisa, first of all, Thank You for all the information about parakeets!!!! As a busy mom of 3 daughters, you've made it so simple to just jump online and go to what I need to know!

Ok, I bought the girls each a parakeet, they live together, one is a male, one is a younger female. We've established that thru your website (Thank You). The only concern I do have is the liner for the cage. Currently we are using the corn cob litter. They've seen to be fine with this for months, but I'm still second guessing. I haven't seen anything on their feet close to resembling bruises or scabs or sores. They peck at the litter too. But that's usually when it's close to their feeding time. My oldest feeds them once a day after she gets home from school. SInce I'm home I constantly change the water, sorry but dirty water is just plain nasty. I won't even drink out of my cup after my 18 mnth old has had a go at it LOL.

So my questions is, corn cob litter ok or a no go? Thanks so much again! Hope to hear from you soon! Keep in touch!

Actually my bigger concern here is that you talk about "feeding time" when I am very much against depriving parakeets of food. Just like humans should have 3 big meals and lots of healthy snacks during the day to stabilize their blood sugar, parakeets shouldn't get just one or two meals and then starve in between. I have information on parakeet feeding here -

On the corn cob litter, I imagine that is fine. I'm not sure why you need litter at all, though? It's not like the parakeets cover their poops like a cat does. They just sit there and dry up. So it's just as good to have a paper liner that you can throw away vs having lots of corn cobs and a piece of paper beneath it to ...
