Wing Clipping

User Question
What is your opinion on wing clipping? I took in a lost Keet and I think the only way I can train him is to clip his wings. I have cats so I am concerned for his safety. I am very careful though, I have only tried o handle when we are in a room alone. He flys all over and hurts himself.

Also I want to get another, what sexes go good together? He is male.

Lisa's Answer
I have a lot of information about this on my site, but there are several things here. First, your keet should never be out until it is hand trained. So there is already an issue if your keet is flying around without being hand trained. Second, since you hand train a bird IN its cage you should never need to clip the wings. So I definitely would not do that. Third, since you have cats, to have your bird shorn would be really dangerous! If the keet DID get out with the cats by accident, now the bird is doomed to death because she can't fly to safety.

Definitely only let the keet out after it is trained, and into a room that is closed and has a sign on the door just in case someone else comes around (assuming you don't live alone).

I would always get keets of the same sex unless you have talked to a vet, bought the necessary equipment and are fully prepared for breeding. If you get keets of different sexes there is always a high chance of eggs - which is a 24 hr a day job.
