Parakeet Bites my Boyfriend

User Question
I have a question about the aggressive behavior of my parakeet who is about a year old. He is very well trained and loves me but when it comes to certain people like my boyfriend he will bite and get very angry.

I was wondering if parakeets can tell the difference between their owner and strangers and how I could get him to start being nice to my guests:)

Lisa's Answer
Yes parakeets can DEFINITELY not only tell the difference between people but even learn their names and nicknames :) They are VERY very smart creatures. So I know parakeets that can say "Good morning John" and "good morning Sarah" and so on, and only say good morning in the morning, and good night at night, and so on. They are quite intelligent.

They can also be quite jealous :) So your keet sounds like he has fallen in love with you and is defending you from this rival. You can of course try to convince the keet to accept the rival, but that would be pretty against every instinct in a keet's system. It would be like your boyfriend accepting that you have another guy come over and snuggle with you while he is there :) So it might be best to have your boyfriend playfully accept this little romantic soul and know that he can't be 'friends'.
