My Parakeet Became Wild Again

User Question
hi, i have a budgie thats about 2 years old and when i got her i didnt train her that much, i would take her out of the cage every day but then i kind of got bored of her after a while and i didnt play with her that much.

now i feel really bad cause she stays in her cage all day, when i put my finger in she bites it and she goes on it but then jumps off and its really hard to get her out! somtimes i can get her out and she'll sit on my shoulder but she'll just sit there and wont even move! do you know any way that i could re-train her to come out of the cage?

In essence hand training is all about building a trust between you and a parakeet, about building a bond. Yes, you can definitely rebuild that bond, it just takes effort. Think of it as having a boyfriend or girlfriend. If you just ignore that person for months and months, the relationship will fall apart. You have to put time and effort into any relationship for it to work and be happy.

So start training your parakeet every day again, following the instructions on the site, working with her and playing with her. After a few weeks, I'm sure she will be back to trusting you again!
