Clipping Wings and Hand Training

User Question
I got a keet for christmas (Damien) and he trusts me and doesn't mind for my hand to be in the cage and gets up the majority of the time of my finger when I put it in the cage. His wings are clipped though (the store had clipped them) and I don't know how well he can fly. He is a young keet and I was just wondereing if I let him out of his cage would he get hurt with his wings clipped? plus I am afraid that I wouldn't catch him or something if I let him out, we had 2 parakeets when I was little and they both got hurt because they got out. Soooo I guess my questions are will his clipped wings put him in danger when I let him out and will it be easy to catch him? Your site has been a lot of help to me, lol right now he is chirping along to Guns 'n' roses- don't cry. :-)

A keet should never be out of the cage until it is fully hand trained. If it is hand trained, it will come to you when you want it to, so it shouldn't matter at all if its wings are clipped or not. Keets LOVE to fly and if anything they get into far more trouble if their wings are clipped. If they have wings, they can fly to safety. If they have no wings, they can plummet and get hurt. So I highly recommend letting your keet's wings grow out.

If your keet is tame and out, it won't get hurt unless you failed to make the room fully safe before you let it out. So that is your responsibility as the owner, to always keet-proof a room before you let the keet out to play. I have a lot of info on that on my site.
