Parakeets and Cats

User Question
Can Parakeets get along with cats? And if so, how would i go about training them to be together? Thanks

I think I talk about this a lot on the site, since I have 2 cats and at one point had 4 cats. As much as you might think a cat is 'tame', a cat is always a carnivore who has been trained from birth (and from all instincts) to eat birds. That is what cats do. You might have the cat and bird together 100 times and 99 of those times, the cat is quite peaceful. But it only takes that one time for that cat to be angry or annoyed or curious or playful and swat at the parakeet to kill it.

The lesson is to always keep the cat locked out of the room when the keet is loose. That's the only way to keep things safe. I know many people who swore their cat was peaceful and kind - and then ended up with a dead keet. It's not because the cat was BAD. It was that the cat is being a CAT - and that is the only thing a cat knows how to be. You can't yell at a cat for doing things a cat is supposed to do.
