Poop Training

User Question
Just wanted to say that I've had my parakeet for a week now (my girlfriend had him for 6 months before I took him) and he's doing much better after reading some of the tips on your site. He still bites some, but nothing like he used to. He is still very protective when he's in his cage, but I built him a play arena that he loves. I connect his cage to the arena via a cheap ladder and he'll come out, play, go back to his cage to eat, and come right back out. I can also get him to fly to my finger whenever I ring his bell. He's such a joy to play with and so fun to watch now. My only question for you is if you have any tips on how to poop train a parakeet. I'd like for him to fly back to his cage to poop. I know of some people that have had success with this, but being my first bird, I could use some tips. Thank you

You really can't poop train a parakeet. The best you can do is get them to sometimes poop when you say "poop!" - if they have to go. But parakeets poop often and really don't think about it when they do.

Keets really don't fly around pooping like an aerial attack squadron. They have a few spots they hang out. Just put paper towels in those spots, and clean them daily or so. It's quite easy!
