Parakeets and Odors

User Question
I heard that all animals including parakeets produce and odor. Is this true? Also, does the parakeet have to be in a room with covered windows?

Lisa's Answer
Parakeets love to take baths, and if you let them bathe daily, they don't have any more odor than say a freshly-bathed toddler has with clean diapers. If on the other hand you never let your parakeet take a bath, never clean their cage and let the dirt pile up, then sure, all of that will begin to smell. It's your job as a responsible owner to keep the parakeet clean.

Sunlight is very healthy for a parakeet - I have no idea why you would deliberately cover the windows of a parakeet's room! You want as much light to get in there as possible. When it's *nighttime* you want to cover the cage so they don't get a draft, and so they have dark so they can sleep. But heck that's true for human beings too - most humans want to sleep with a blanket on and with the lights off.
