Vanishing Egg

User Question
I have had a male and female parakeet for about two years. Recently, I gave them a nesting box, and not too long afterwards, I saw the pair mating. My female keet soon dissappeared into the box to lay her eggs. When the eggs didn't hatch for around 30 days, I figured they were infertile, and took them out. Then, a few days ago, my birds mated again, and yesterday, upon opening the box, I found that my female had laid another egg. However, this morning, when I went to check on her, it had dissappeared. I've heard that sometimes females will eat their unwanted eggs, or that the males would. Is this possible, and is there a way to prevent it from happening? Thanks.

You really really need to get those birds checked out for health before you encourage them to breed, talk to a vet and get several books on bird breeding. This is a serious, 24 hr a day task to care for the mom bird and to watch over the eggs in case of trouble with the babies. You shouldn't leave eggs in there for 30 days ...
