Male and Female Parakeet Fighting

User Question
Two years ago I bought a female keet, named babe. She always seems sort of lonely, so i bought her a friend. It turns out that the new keet i bought about a month ago is a male, named kiwi. At first they got along just fine, cuddling rubbing heads, exchanging food, but just the past week they have started to fight more. Is this a sign of anything? should i separate them, or is it just a phase?

Lisa's Answer
I have a lot of advice about bringing in a new keet and in general you should never just dump a new keet into an existing cage, for many reasons. Also obviously male and female keets can have babies, which is a serious task to take on. It would involve you getting medical checkups for the keets, getting books on breeding, and getting the medicine and equipment to have on hand in case of trouble. I really recommend having side by side cages for your keets, so they can be friends but not lovers.
