Iguanas in a Parakeet Cage
User Question
I am planning to build an indoor cage for an iguana. The cage will be 8 feet tall, 4 feet wide and 12 feet long. It will have a shallow 2 foot by 4 foot plastic pond with slowly running water, safe live plants and trees,a sodded area, a temperature gradient between 75 and 85 degrees with one small area of 95 degrees for basking. Uva/uvb lighting in a couple of iguana perch areas and "normal" lighting throughout. Iguana food and budgie food is very similar with the exception of the seeds which iguanas just ignore. In the past we have kept other animals with iguanas with great success including rats, rabbits, and guinea pigs, they seem to enjoy the company, or the body heat. Are there any reasons that you know of why this would not be a good idea to try with a few budgies that like each other and an iguana or two? Diseases etc. I definitely would not add any omnivores, like rats, to the mix.
Lisa's Answer
Parakeets poop constantly and their cage lining needs to be changed every few days. That really wouldn't be a good idea in the same cage with a creature that *lives* on the ground - it would be extremely unsanitary. Keets really need to be in a cage where the entire floor is removeable, has nothing on it, and can be scrubbed.
