How Old is a Keet

User Question
I recently found a parakeet and have falllen in love with her! I was wondering if there were anything that might indicate the age range she is in. Also, I read many letters from other budgie owners worrying their litlle bird was depressed and you reassured them all, but are there any SIGNS of depression to look out for?

Really the only way to even guess at a keet's age is the head strips, which I talk about here -

but it's always really just a guess, and really it doesn't matter much. You can have a 3 year old keet love you just as much as a 1 year old keet. Keets live to be 15-20 years old so a few years is only a small amount of time.

Every keet has a different attitude towards life. Some are acrobats, some are singers, some are snugglers. So the most important thing is to learn what your keet is NORMALLY like and to watch for changes. If your keet likes to sit still and sing softly, then that would be normal and happy. But if your keet likes to run around like a wildman and do acrobatics - but then for a day or two the keet sits perfectly still in a corner and does nothing but warble occasionally, that would be something to look into.
