Sleeping Head Under Wing and Eating Poop

User Question
My parakeet has been eating its poop, even though there's enough food in the feeder, and has been putting its head in its wings. I am concerned and would like to know why it is acting strange.

Lisa's Answer
First, all birds sleep sometimes with their head on their wing. It's how they relax. They don't have a pillow! Otherwise their little neck muscles get tired of holding the head up all day and all night. You see drawings of this all the time.

Many animals eat their poop, maybe it's the texture or something. Bird poop is just squished up seed, it really isn't 'gross'. But in any case, your cage should have a wire floor so that the poop falls through the wires and onto the liner below. That way the keet can't get to the poop. Be sure to change your liner daily. That should help. Also make sure you give your keet a nutrition rotation of food - not just seed. Your keet should be eating veggies, fruits, etc.
