Bug Repellent in Cage
User Question
I have a boy parakeet and I have noticed lately a small larvae on my walls and ceiling. The seem to turn into small moths or butterfly types insects. I am constantly trying to rid them yet they are very persistant. I clean the parakeets cage frequently and they inevitably come back. Is this problem coming from Riley (my parakeet) or maybe his seed? He also has one of those bug repelant things you put on the side of the cage. Not sure what is going on and it would be greatly appreciated to get some kind of an answer.
Thank you for your time
Lisa's Answer
NO NO NO take the bug repellent out of the cage!! You don't want ANYTHING poisonous inside a bird cage. The bugs are obviously not spontaneously appearing in the cage. You need to track down where these bugs ARE coming from and get rid of them, but poisoning your parakeet is never going to be the answer. It's not like they're growing inside your parakeet. Clean the cage liner daily. Keep the seed inside a tupperware container. Move the cage somewhere safe, and then figure out where the bugs are coming from.
