Mirrors and Dry Beaks

User Question
My bird is new to me. My niece, who has a parakeet, had come to my house to see the bird. She had pointed out to me that, my birds' beak looks dry and brittle. Is it possible that she had hurt her beak. She is a very skittish bird and always banging into the cage. Is it somthing that I should be concerned about. If it is, is there medication for it?

I also have another concern. I had Gracie (the bird) for twelve days, sometimes she trust me and sometimes she is skittish. I tried to put in a mirror with a bell into her cage and she opened her wings and started to fly into the cage. What happened? i feel like i lost her trust...

what should I do?

Lisa's Answer
First, I really wouldn't put a mirror in the cage. I talk about that a lot on the website. Hand training can easily take several weeks and it sounds like you should start on that first!

If it's a new bird, take it to the vet for its initial check-up. Your vet will be able to say how the bird is doing and if there are any issues to clean up :)
