Cockatiel and Parakeet
User Question
Thank you so much for your site. About five months ago I rescued a cockatiel and a parakeet who lived together in a tiny cage. Since then I have trained the budgie and gotten him a companion, which I have also tamed. My cockatiel doesn't hiss at me nearly as much as he did when we first got him. He is still in a tiny cage and I am saving up for a very large one that will give him a lot of room to strech his wings. Would you recomend taming him the same way as I have trained my parakeets? Would you recomend getting him a companion? He didn't get along with my parakeet, and even though I am trying to tame him I think that he might really help him to have some bird interaction. Thanks again for the great site.
Lisa's Answer
Yes, you can certainly work on the cockatiel as you did the parakeet. Your best bet is to talk in the forum with the other cockatiel owners to get ideas about the socialization though. Usually having those 2 birds - even in separate cages - is fine for them to have a 'buddy' to sing with. You don't necessarily have to get 2 of every kind of bird you own - and some birds would get grumpy with the competition.
