Training Parakeets for my Mom
User Question
I wanted to say that I found your web page on parakeets really helpful. My mother recently ran out and bought two parakeets even though she knows next to nothing about birds. She bought a blue one named Simon and a green one named Pete. She wants them to be trained, but she wants me to do it. so I came to your website and actually learned quite a bit about my little buddies. I was concerned about them having clipped wings when she bought them, but the bird guy at petco said they would evevtually grow back. anyhow thanks for all the great info.

I have to point out here that those parakeets are going to become YOUR parakeets if you are the one that is training them :) Parakeets are VERY smart and definitely tell people apart. They react very differently to different people. If you are the one spending time with them and training them, you are the one they will fall in love with and want to be with. If you and your mom stand in the room they will fly away from your mom and towards you. I can very clearly see how my 3 parakeets react differently to different people in the room. If my son is in the room, they fly to him and play with him. If a stranger comes in the room, they squawk and fly away from the stranger.
Just so you understand that :) It's a great thing for you! But if your mom expects them to be instantly tame for her without any work or effort on her part, it won't work that way. Parakeets are far to smart to instantly trust someone.
On the clipped wings, definitely they grow back. Just give them time :)
