Parakeet Obsessed with Toys

User Question
I have had my bird for several months, he is finger trained and seems very fond of me. In the past, my bird always wanted to be around me, on my shoulder, the top of my head, anywhere. He would screech very loudly until I would open his cage door.

Well, a few weeks ago i got my bird two toys, he loves them very much, but now he hardly ever comes out of the cage. The door is kept open from the time I wake up to the time I got to sleep, and he has become very quiet. It appears all he wants to do is play with his new toys, is this normal or should I be concerned?

Lisa's Answer
Parakeets want to be with a flock. Let's assume your keet is alone most of the day and you are only home rarely. Then if you give your keet mirrors, the keet is obviously going to become fond of those mirrors. It is really important that you are the flock of your keets and your keet is part of your flock. So pay attention to this situation, the attention you pay to your keets, the toys your keet has to play with when you are not around ...
