Cheap Parakeet Toys

Just wanted to update you on Tweety. I emailed you how he had been hurt when the cat knocked his cage off the shelf.

He is doing pretty well. The leg healed up nicely with the only problem being that he really can't grasp with his foot. He does use it to put his full weight on, which the vet was afraid he may not even be able to do that.

He climbs the cage, which I got a much larger cage for him and his two new roommates.

A woman got in touch with me through a friend and asked if I wanted her son's birds as he was too young to take good care of them. They are both very young. They are way more active than Tweety ever was, he is about a year old, and have been rubbing off on him.

It only took about three hours before they all huddled together in the big cage, I was amazed. They get along great and the two males take turns feeding the female and really don't bother each other too much.

I was worried at first where Tweety had the bad foot that the other male, Sky, would take advantage and he would be stuck at the bottom of the cage. Luckily that never happened. They all sit on the top perch when they sleep for the night.

Oh I also wanted to tell you about their favorite toy. I had made a long chain of paperclips one day while talking on the phone. I had it hanging near my desk and I let them out for a couple of hours and they all loved it. I then hung a couple of chains in the cage and they love them. One likes to swing them in to the other birds while they are feeding, one likes to swing them into the side of the cage...actually Tweety just likes to make any kind of noise lol... and Sky loves to pull them over the perches from one side to the other and back again.

I had to hang two chains as they fought when there was only one. I used stailess steel small paperclips. I rounded off the sharp edges and cleaned them in rubbing alcohol to get rid of any machine oil residue that may have been on them. There is probably 60 dollars worth of toys in that cage and they like the ones that cost about 2 cents that best.

Anyway, thanks for the site and the info. I am so glad to have birds in my life again. I forgot how much fun they are.

Parakeets tend to like easy toys that don't involve a lot of thought. Anything that they can chew or that makes noise or that is yummy to eat is good with them!
