Carpet Cleaning and Parakeets

Thought I would not like the job of taking care of a bird, but fell in love with one while bird sitting, so went out and brought home a two month old parakeet after reading your website. I am 76 year old and Cutie has brought so much fun into my life. We have to have our carpets cleaned. Will a chemical cleaning cause any problems with Cutie? With your help & advice, Cutie came out of the cage on the second day and even tho I have 10 adult children and 23 grandchildren I have more fun with him and am trying to teach him to talk...a friendly, friendly little guy! Cutie sounds great! Isn't it amazing how much fun they are, and what little bundles of joy they can be? :)

Definitely carpet cleaning can release noxious fumes that are quite bad for little birds. Someone else wrote me when her oven cleaning killed her 2 parakeets in only a few minutes. I highly advise that you put the parakeets in a room far from where the carpets are, and leave the windows wide open (assuming it's reasonably warm outside). If it's warm enough I would even take them outside if you're doing the entire house, and let their cage sit on the back porch for the day while the carpets are being cleaned. Just put a towel on half the cage so they are shielded from breezes.
