apple-touch-icon-precomposed.png File

Every website should have two files in their main level directory. One is apple-touch-icon-precomposed.png and the other is apple-touch-icon. Here is why these two files are so important.

Many users are now accessing the web through smartphones and tablets. These devices let the user make a bookmark icon on that unit's desktop area. By default both Apple and non-Apple systems seem to be using these two file names as their default icon:

The precomposed version is expected to have the full look and feel - rounded corners, that sort of thing. The regular icon file is expected to be a stock square which the software will then auto-pretty-up for you. You want to have both files on your server. Otherwise all these systems will go looking for the files and generate failures when they can't find them.

It used to be that common wisdom had this file be 57x57 pixels in size square. However with new larger tablets it's now recommended that you make your image 114x114 square. Smaller units will then auto-reduce that file down for you. So if you go with 114x114 it'll look crisp and clean at the larger size and it'll just auto-shrink for the smaller size.

Here's my image which is currently 57x57.

If you were to bookmark any page on this site with your Apple or Droid device, this is the icon you would see to go with my bookmark. Feel free to give it a try!
