1977 Christmas Stamp - 13 Cent Valley ForgeThis stamp says Christmas 13c on the lower right in red. It says Valley Forget Christmas on the top in black, then USA on the left above the 13c mark in black. George Washington is shown kneeling with a black and red cape, and yellow pants, with black boots and a sword before him.
The painting is Washington at Valley Forge by J.C. Leyendecker from 1935. Born in 1874, Leyendecker was well known as an American illustrator, doing covers for magazines images for US Savings Bond posters, and so on. He's the one who "invented" the Santa Claus image as a fat, jolly man in a red suit for the Saturday Evening Post in a series of covers. This Washington image had been used as a cover for the Saturday Evening Post as well.
This is the Scott Catalogue #1729 Stamp.
This stamp is reasonably common, and a used stamp is worth about 15 cents.
