White Spots in Throat / Strep Throat / Tonsil Stones
December 21 2009 - Day 2
On Day 2 I woke up with the same sharp scratchy feeling on one side of my throat, although a little less. I called in to the doctor and set up an appointment for 2:15pm. I had an optomitrist appointment for 3:30pm but they are near each other and I figured that was plenty of time. Also, if I did have strep, I wanted to have time to call and cancel the optomitrist appointment.
I took some photos before we went in. Well, Bob did. It looks like two of the smaller spots have gone away, but the main spot is still there.
We got at the doctor's office before 2:15pm. And waited. Finally someone showed up and took us into a room. And we waited. Finally a doctor showed up. It was almost 3pm by now. She took a quick glance, said it was either tonsillitis or strep, and called for a nurse to come in and do a swab. Bob had to call at this point to let the optomitrist know we weren't going to make it in time - and they yelled at Bob for using his cell phone! Even though it was their own fault we'd sat there for 45 minutes waiting for a scheduled appointment, without anyone giving us any time updates at all!
In any case, on to the swab. What they do is hold down your tongue with a tongue depressor and then swab around the very back of your throat with a long Q-tip. It makes you gag. They wanted to do two tests. One was a quick test which took 7 minutes. This one is only 95% accurate, so to be doubly sure they also do a long 2-day test which is more accurate.
The quick test said I did not have strep, but just in case they put me on an antibiotic - Azithromycin. Apparently if the test had shown I 100% had strep they would have put me on a "stronger antibiotic" but as they weren't sure they put me on a weaker one. The course of action for this is 6 pills. You take 2 the first day, then 1 each of the remaining days. You have to be sure to take all of them even if you start to feel better. Also you have to take them at pretty much the same time every day for them to work well.
In any case, we took some of the long Q-tips with us to use at home, we swung by the pharmacy to get the antibiotics, and then we headed home. I didn't feel sick or have a runny nose or anything else - just this occasional sharp pain in my tonsil area.
If nothing else, I'm learning what my tonsils look like! I also learned (again, undoubtedly I'd been told before) that Bob's tonsils had been inflamed regularly when he was young and they finally took them out. So he is tonsil-less. I wonder if that means he can't catch these illnesses from me.
Move on to Tonsillitis Day 3
