Uta Hagen Dies at Age 84

Uta Hagen, a German actress who achieved fame in her role in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, died on Wednesday. Uta was 84.

Uta was born on June 12, 1919 in Gottingen, Germany. Her family was very artistic. At age 7, her father got a job as head of the art history department of University of Wisconsin.

While she did start going to college, she quit to play Ophelia in Hamlet in 1937. A mere year later she was on Broadway in The Seagull. She married actor Jose Ferrer shortly after that and stayed with him for 10 years. They had a daughter together. In 1951 she married Berghof and was with him until his death in 1990.

Uta was best known for playing Martha in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" in the 60s on Broadway. The play and Uta both won Tony awards. The was also in the movie The Boys from Brazil.
