Content Rating - Believing Your EyesThis page has spoilers in it! It describes the content of Believing Your Eyes for those who want to know more about these areas. In general all of my stories are gently written - they do not contain explicit details of encounters or violence.
This is one of the most explicit of my medieval novels, as it tackles head-on a challenging subject - how a woman can heal after being sexually assaulted. The heroine, Lucia, is a brave warrior. When she was younger she obeyed her family's wishes and became engaged to a fellow soldier. They were intimate but then the soldier betrayed the family. This all happens "off-screen". So Lucia comes into the story with emotional scars. Slowly, tenderly, Stephen brings her hope that she can love again. They have one night together, which is described gently, without explicit detail.
As this situation is building, Ian, the young lord of the keep she heals at, becomes obsessed with her. She tries to discourage him gently, but when he realizes she is instead in love with Stephen, he snaps and forces himself on her. It is not explicitly described, but it is made clear that she's trying to fight him off - and fails.
The novel then examines how she copes with the situation, how Stephen tries to help her heal, and the myriad of emotions she feels recovering from this assault.
She becomes pregnant and is not sure if it was because of her night of passion with Stephen or from Ian's rape. This adds further trauma to her healing.
There are several fights in the novel, but none are graphic in nature. They are described enough that the reader knows what is going on, without excessive detail.
Alcohol was a normal part of medieval life; the alcohol made beverages safe to drink. There is drinking mentioned, but not to excess. The only person who drinks heavily is Ian, and it is shown to be a negative thing.
Please let me know if you have any other questions about the specifics of this novel.
